Description

The famous city of Kristiansand is a modern and charming city known as the "capital of the south". It is the main point for trade and maritime traffic in southern Norway. Next to the nearby municipality of Sogne (Søgne in the national language), it is a summer resort for many Norwegians and a gateway to Denmark.

Kristiansand was founded by King Christian IX in 1641. Throughout its five centuries of history it has established itself as one of the largest cities in Norway. In it is the Vest Agder Cultural Heritage Museum, the largest open-air museum in the country, which takes us -through original buildings- to 4 different periods of life in the city. After a walk along the commercial street Markens the traveler discovers the Fish Market, of traditional beauty.

Within the adjacent town Sogne is a small fishing village, Hollen, which from its streets and "fairytale" houses opens the door to a fascinating view of the sea, right at the mouth of the Sogneelva River.

Be sure to visit Kristiansand and Sogne, picturesque and quirky places for fjord cruisers. You will see how life is lived in the "southern capital" of Norway, but above all how it was lived centuries ago. Do you dare? We take you.

PROGRAM

Arrival of the ship

Departure of the excursion. The guide waits at the port with the sign "Shorexc"

We will visit the largest open-air museum in Norway: Vest Agder Cultural Heritage Museum. In it about 40 houses have been rebuilt and the area has been divided into 4 sections representing different eras. The houses are original and the oldest date from the seventeenth century. They give us a picture of how southern Norwegian society lived at that time.

On our way we will take a bus tour through the city center of Kristiansand, sighting the old quarter of the city, Posebyen. We can also see the Christiansholm Fortress, built with the founding of the city, on the seashore.

We will move to Høllen (in the municipality of Søgne), a small and picturesque village that gives us an idea of what the villages of the south of the country are like. Once in Høllen you will have the opportunity to stroll through its old streets full of picturesque wooden houses.

Return to Kristiansand, along the coast road, with beautiful panoramic views of the idyllic summer houses of the area (Hytter) and the archipelago made up of small islands.

Back in Kristiansand, you can take a walk to the pier, visiting the city center. On the way, we will visit (exterior) the Cathedral, the Town Hall, the market place and the pedestrian and shopping area. (This walk will be done on foot if there is enough time, if not, it will be done as a panoramic tour from the bus).

The Cathedral "Kristiansand Domkirke" It is a neo-Gothic temple completed in 1885, designed by the architect Henrik Thrap-Meyer. It is the third cathedral built in the city of Kristiansand, and one of the most important in Norway.

The "Torvet" market is the traditional place of the city where the markets of farmers and local producers were held. Today, there are usually stalls selling local fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants to homemade jams and honey.

We will continue along the shopping street "Markens" until we reach the seashore being able to see where the Fish Market is located where there is a great variety of local fish and seafood on display. Photo stop at the new concert hall "Kilden" an amazing mix of modern architecture, design and technology.

Return to the ship.

End of the tour.
