Description

We take you on this excursion to the ancient city of Syracuse, one of the oldest metropolises in all of Europe. Come and discover the beauty of the ancient ruins that the city still preserves, which make it a favorite destination within the excursions in Italy.

Located on the Ionian coast of Sicily, Syracuse was founded in antiquity by the Corinthians, shortly after the founding of Rome, in 734 BC. In its rich historic center we can discover the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, which keeps inside the Greek theater, the Roman amphitheater and the famous Ear of Dionysus (an opening in the stone that forms the Otomy of Paradise). On the Ortigia Peninsula is the Cathedral of Syracuse (Il Duomo), on the basis of a temple dedicated to Athena; Piazza del Duomo has been one of the most used locations in internationally renowned films and series.

If you want to know a city proud of its identity, with the best archaeological remains of Sicily, you can not miss this magnificent excursion. Book your place and come with us to Syracuse during your cruise. A tour that will leave you with the best memory!

PROGRAM

Arrival of the Ship.

The guide awaits you at the port with the sign "Shorexc".

We will leave the port for the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, where you can admire monuments such as:

Greek Theater: The Greek Theater was built in the fifth century (BC). It represents the greatest example of Western Greek theatrical architecture. It has the peculiarity of being carved almost entirely in the rock.

The Altar of Hiero: The Altar of Hiero or the Great Altar of Syracuse is a monumental altar in the old town of Neapolis, Sicily. It was built in the Hellenistic period by the tyrant Hiero II between 241 and 215 BC. It is believed to have been dedicated to Zeus Eleutherios.1 and is the largest altar known from antiquity.2
Almost nothing, except the foundations of the structure, survives. It was built partly with masonry blocks and partly carved from living rock. The altar itself is 20.85 meters wide and 195.8 meters long — exactly a Doric stadium. It sits on a crepidoma with three steps, at the base it is 199.07 meters long and 22.51 meters wide. This makes it the largest known altar of the ancient world.

The Roman Amphitheater: It began to be built in the first century (AD). Like the Greek Theatre, it benefited from the orography of the terrain and was carved directly into the rock. In the center, the rectangular cavity attached to the entrance by a pit was intended to store the material. For its part, the water used for naumachias and to clean the sand at the end of the bloody fighting was stored in a pool to the right of the pre-Romanesque chapel of San Nicolo dei Cordari.

The famous Ear of Dionysus: Grotto excavated on the Hill of the Temenites. Its name comes from the siminilud with a human ear.

Then we will move to Ortigia Island where we can admire the Temple of Apollo, the Arethusa fountain and the Piazza del Duomo with its Cathedral.

Return to the port.
