The city of Rome awaits us! A wonderful amount of art and beauty in the capital of Italy; enjoy seeing Piazza Navona and Castel San Angelo as we head towards the Vatican. Magnificent symbols of the grandeur of Ancient Rome: arriving in Rome is a journey back in time to its 3000 years of history.

Discovering the Vatican City, with its splendid St. Peter's Square (almost 4 centuries old and which can accommodate about 300,000 people inside) is a pleasure for the senses. The Square prepares us for the magnificence of St. Peter's Basilica, with great architectural richness and a multitude of artistic works by great universal geniuses (Michelangelo, Bernini, etc.). It has capacity for 20,000 people, measures 190 meters in length, 44.5 m in height, and covers an area of 2.3 hectares; The dome reaches a height of 136 meters.

Departure to St. Peter's Square.

St. Peter's Square is one of the largest and most beautiful in the world. It was entirely designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between 1656 and 1667. The dimensions of the square are spectacular: 320 meters long and 240 meters wide. In the liturgies and most outstanding events St. Peter's Square has come to host more than 300,000 people. The 284 columns (16 meters each) and 88 pilasters that border the square in a portico of four rows open on each side symbolizing the embrace of welcome of the Church to the visitor who seems to invite to enter. At the top of the columns are 140 statues of saints made in 1670 by Bernini's disciples.

In the center of the square stands the obelisk and the two fountains, one by Maderno (1614) and another by Bernini (1675). The obelisk, 25 meters high, was brought to Rome from Egypt in 1586.

Return to the port.
