Mycenae is -according to Greek mythology- the city erected by Perseus and abode of King Agamemnon. Some of the houses found in this incredible Acropolis are from about 3000 BC, and on the walls we will contemplate the oldest monumental sculpture in Europe: the Gate of the Lions, from 1250 BC approximately. To complete your excursion, a phenomenal visit to Palamidi and its exceptional Venetian fortress of the early eighteenth century. Did you know that for several decades of the nineteenth century there was a terrible prison in one of the bastions of the fortress, where all prisoners served life sentences?

Crossing the fields full of orange and lemon trees of the Argolis, we will head towards the ancient city of Mycenae.

The mythical kingdom of Agamemnon, sung by Homer in his epics, was the most important and richest palace center of the Bronze Age and where one of the most important cultures of Ancient Greece developed.

According to mythology, it was built by Perseus (Son of Zeus), aided by the Cyclopes.

According to the myth, the descendants of Perseus reigned for three generations until King Eurystheus died without leaving descendants, then the inhabitants of Mycenae elected King Atreus, son of Pelops and Hippodamia, and father of Agamemnon and Menelaus.

– Visit of the Acropolis of Mycenae.

The entrance to the Royal Citadel will be through the Gate of the Lions, the oldest sample of monumental sculpture in Europe. Inside we will see the Royal Tombs, the Palace complex and the rest of the houses of high dignitaries, as well as other important constructions. Already outside the Acropolis, we will visit the monumental vaulted tomb, called the Treasury of Atreus.

Return to Nafplio.
